EMS Terms

   We thought it would be helpful to give you a small list of EMS Terms to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology we use.  This is only a small portion of our lingo but it should prove to be helpful.  Please give us some credit, this is for your amusement only.

Air Splint-  A semi-rigid pneumatic splinting device.  Air is blown in through a valve and  leaks  out through numerous small holes

Anxiety- The mental state of an EMT as he approaches the scene of a multiple casualty incident

Baloney Sandwich-  The meal awaiting the EMT once he returns from the call (See T Bone steak for more information)

Barium-  What we do with dead folks

Couple-  The maximum number of beers any patient will admit to having consumed within the past 24 hours

Dilate-  To live longer than your kids do

Enema-  Not a friend

Essential Equipment-  Something left at the station

Fester-  Quicker than someone else

Fibula-  A small lie

High Anxiety-  See anxiety, only 10 minutes later

Impotent-  Distinguished; well known

Panic-  See high anxiety, only 5 minutes later

Siren-  A noise-making device, ignored by most on the highway, but found useful when you are behind an elderly person to put them in cardiac arrest

T-Bone Steak-  A very expensive cut of meat that is perfectly cooked, hot, and ready to eat 30 seconds before the pager goes off

Toilet-  A porcelain plumbing device sat on by an EMT to make his pager go off

Tumor- More than one

Two-  See couple

Urine-  Opposite of mine

Varicose-  Near by
